Field notes

A dog that spends real time outside needs somewhere dry to be, and a plastic kennel does that job better than wood in most climates because there is nothing in it to rot, warp or grow mold. This one measures 26 by 35 by 27 inches, which suits medium dogs comfortably. Three larger sizes exist in the same design if yours is bigger. The shell sheds rain and snow, and the floor sits raised off the ground so runoff passes underneath instead of soaking the bedding.

Ventilation is designed in rather than left to the door: air vents through the structure keep the interior from turning into a hot box in summer, which is the failure mode of every sealed plastic kennel. Assembly needs no tools at all, only the supplied buckles and screws, and takes a few minutes. Two ground nails come in the box to pin the house against wind, which matters because the whole thing weighs about 14 pounds. The roof is rated to hold a 160-pound adult, so the panels are structural rather than a lid.

The dossier

Three things worth knowing

01

The raised floor is the whole point

A kennel sitting flat on grass or a patio wicks up every puddle and stays cold. Lifting the floor puts an air gap under the dog: water runs beneath, the base stays dry, and bedding does not sour after the first wet week. It also keeps the interior warmer in cold weather, because ground contact pulls more heat out of a dog than moving air does.

02

Vents matter more than most buyers expect

Plastic in direct sun heats fast. Without cross-flow, a closed kennel becomes hotter inside than the yard, and the dog stops using it in exactly the months you bought it for. The vents here move air through continuously. Position the house so the entrance faces away from prevailing wind and it works in both directions: airflow in July, shelter in January.

03

Pin it down before the first storm

Fourteen pounds is easy to carry and easy for wind to move. The two ground nails supplied are not optional in an exposed yard. Drive them at the front corners into soil or turf. On a hard patio there is nothing to drive into, so weight the base or set the house in a sheltered corner instead.

The honest ledger

Strengths & trade-offs

Where it earns its price

  • Elevated floor keeps bedding out of ground water
  • Vented shell instead of a sealed box that overheats in sun
  • Assembles with buckles and screws, no tools at all
  • Roof takes 160 lbs, and two ground nails are in the box

What to accept going in

  • Sized 26 × 35 × 27 for medium dogs; larger breeds need a bigger size
  • 14 lbs is light enough that wind moves it if the nails are not driven
  • Plastic shell alone is shelter, not insulation for a hard winter

Deployment

Where this model works

The yard dog

Shade in the afternoon, dry ground under the floor and a wind-facing wall rather than a wind-facing door.

The covered patio

Somewhere for the dog to be that is not the doormat, and the ground nails are unnecessary under a roof.

The working farm dog

Nothing to rot when it rains for a week, hosed out in a minute, and light enough to move to whichever paddock the work is in.

Owner questions

Asked before buying

What size dog fits?

This one is 26 by 35 by 27 inches, comfortable for medium dogs. The same design comes in 28 × 26 × 28, 34.5 × 30.5 × 32 and 41 × 37 × 39 for larger breeds.

How does it handle rain and snow?

The plastic shell is weather-resistant and the floor sits raised off the ground, so water passes underneath rather than pooling inside. Air vents keep condensation down.

Does assembly need tools?

No. Buckles and screws come with it and go together by hand in a few minutes. Two ground nails are also included for anchoring.
